DLP Presentation 3: Smart Meters for Electricity
The implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), commonly referred to as “Smart Meters”, is growing significantly in many countries, including the US, which currently has a penetration level close to 50 percent. Smart meters are capable of two-way communication between the distribution utility and the customer site, enabling a number of new services and functions. While their primary function remains the same as electro-mechanical meters, i.e. measuring power consumption for billing purposes, the data captured and transmitted by smart meters have the ability to significantly improve management and control of the distribution system.
This 40-minute talk will present the short history of smart meters, focusing on technical advances that have taken place to improve their safety and performance, and review the technical details of codes, standards and conformity assessment systems that apply to smart meters.
