Keynote Address: The FREEDM System: Concepts and Challenges

March 17, 2020
9:15  -  9:35 am

The Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems Center at NC State University began with a grand challenge: how can we redesign the grid to accommodate more distributed energy resources like solar PV and battery storage while also maintaining stability, reliability, and safety? Since 2008, FREEDM has been a leader in developing solid state transformers, decentralized control algorithms, and demonstrating all these technologies in our medium voltage high bay lab on Centennial Campus. Dr. Len White, Professor of the Practice in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NC State, will present an overview of FREEDM research and discuss implications for protection design engineers.
